Given the significant volatility and global uncertainties, ACI Singapore organized a Seminar on Outlook for Asia in 2012 on Wednesday, 9 November 2011 at the Executives’ Club.

The combination of a global economic slowdown and political uncertainty in the world’s largest economic blocs had seriously undermined investor sentiment over the past few months. This seminar was therefore arranged at relatively short notice to analyse and discuss these effects and what impact they would have on the Asian markets in 2012.

The Seminar Moderator was Mr Kenneth Kan, ACI Singapore’s Honorary Treasurer and Member,Education Committee.

Joining Kenneth was a distinguished panel comprising:

  • Mr Bilal Hafeez, Deutsche Bank AG, Managing Director and Global Head of FX Research

  • Mr Shankar Narayanaswamy, Standard Chartered Bank, Head of Credit Strategy

  • Mr Claudio Piron, Bank of America- Merrill Lynch Research, Managing Director, Head of Asia ex-Japan Fixed Income and Foreign Exchange Strategy

The seminar format comprising a blend of presentations, panel discussions and Q&A was well received, The evening ended with a networking buffet session among the ACI members, panelists and guests.

26 August 2009 marked a milestone for ACI Asia – The Financial Markets Association (ACI Asia), ACI Singapore – The Financial Markets Association (ACI Singapore) and the Singapore Management University (SMU), as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the 3 partners to launch a series of training and certification programmes for professionals in the financial markets industry in Singapore and the Asian region.  This represents the first significant collaboration between a local Singapore university and the leading global association of wholesale financial markets professionals.

MOU Signing Ceremony.
From left to right: Associate Professor Annie Koh, Dean of Executive and Professional Education, SMU, Mr Eddie Tan, President ACI Asia, Professor Tan Chin Tiong, Deputy President (External Affairs), SMU and Mr David Lau, President ACI Singapore

The academic collaboration between ACI Asia, ACI Singapore and SMU will result in a comprehensive suite of courses covering the whole spectrum of financial markets job functions & related specialisations.

The curriculum will be designed to meet the rigorous professional standards of ACI, benchmarked against industry best practices as well as the stringent requirements of Singapore’s Financial Industry Competency Standards (FICS).  Industry professionals from financial institutions and qualified individuals in Singaore who enroll in FICS accredited training programmes can apply for up to 90% funding support under the Financial Sector Development Fund (FSDF) set up by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

“The global financial crisis points to a critical need for financial market professionals to go back to basics and knowing how to link the value chain in financial services, be it in trading, treasury sales, product control, risk management or back office support. SMU's partnership with ACI Asia and ACI Singapore is both timely and strategic. By bringing onboard a leading regional association in financial markets and top-tier industry experts in this area, we are able to develop a cutting-edge curriculum and training roadmap that will meet the ever evolving needs of the industry,” said Associate Professor Annie Koh, Dean of Executive and Professional Education,SMU.

“ACI Asia sees this partnership with SMU & ACI Singapore as a milestone in raising the professional competency levels of our members throughout the Asian region. Our education platform is crucial to developing a set of common and consistent standards of best practices which will ensure efficient and seamless execution of financial products and services across the region,” said Mr Eddie Tan, President, ACI Asia.

ACI Singapore has been very successful with its Settlement Operations Training Course (SOTC) and Middle Office Training Course (MOTC) programmes, and has trained over 2,000 professionals since 2006. We are delighted with the opportunity to collaborate with SMU, as it enables ACI Singapore to expand on its suite of training programmes by tapping on the academic experience and vast educational infrastructure of SMU. We are committed to raising the standards of professionalism not only in our Singapore market but, together with ACI Asia, throughout the region, and education is the main platform through which we expect to serve our members and our industry,” said Mr Mervyn Fong, Managing Director, ACI Singapore Association.

Past Years Events - 2008

XVII ACI Games – Singapore , 16th August 2008

When we led halfway through the last ACI Games in KL (2006) & eventually lost by 4-1 margin, we thought we had one of the closest games ever, well till last Saturday. We were down 2-0 by midday, having lost in Golf & Billiards. From newsflash on our mobiles, we sensed a ‘fight back’ when we were leading in both Bowling; Badminton & we were 2-0 up on Soccer (with the M’Sian team reduced to 10 men). My Malaysian counterparts (EXCO & Org Com) also sensed that we will polish off the 3 games. But alas luck was not our side, we had a ‘nail biting’ finish in the rubber game in Badminton (this was better then the semi-finals, Spore-Korea table-tennis at the Olympics I assure you)

Competition behind, we had a very pleasant gathering at dinner. Old acquaintances renewed, new friends made, we parted with a common thought in mind. The Bi-annual ACI Games should be brought back to an annual basis. The 2 EXCO will deliberate further on this in the next few months & so watch this space for further news.

The Games scores are:

Golf : Malaysia 4 Singapore 2
Billiards: Malaysia 5 Singapore 2
Bowling: Malaysia 12 pts Singapore 30 pts
Badminton: Malaysia 5 Singapore 4
Soccer: Malaysia 1 Singapore 5

ACI Singapore Charity Golf 2008 - 25th July @ Tanah Merah Country Club

On 25th July 2008, ACI Singapore held our 16th annual Charity Golf event at Tanah Merah Country Club. Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District was our Guest of Honour and we are grateful for his presence and assistance behind the scene.

We also can never thank our kind sponsors enough as they have unflinchingly stepped forward to help the less unfortunate in spite of the challenging environment in the financial markets. At a time when some of us find it difficult to make ends meet because of the ever rising cost of living, it is heartening that our members, their employers and our friends find within them the compassion to do the magnanimous act of lending a helping hand.

ACI Charity Golf 08 has chosen four charities as our beneficiaries namely, St Andrew's Mission Hospital, Quality of Life Fund(run by the Community Development Council), Down Syndrome Association and Care Community Services Society.

There were two different sets of golfers on that day. One who was greeted with the best weather you can get for golfing in Singapore and the other had their game delayed by intermittent rain but they had their fill of drinks during the rain delay! Nonetheless, we sincerely hope everyone had a good round of golf in a world class course.

Last but not least, from the laughter and boisterous mood during the gala dinner, I gather that food, drinks, lucky dip, Deal or Not Deal game and live band must have been working their magic and making the evening a joyous one.

See you again next year.

Jacob Chee, Acting Executive Director
